why we exist
a cancer diagnosis comes with a financial cost, too.
People impacted by cancer are tending to medical stress, financial stress, emotional stress, and mental stress — regardless of when the cancer diagnosis occurred.
While many people impacted by cancer recognize the emotional and mental stress that comes along with the disease, they're already burdened by large out-of-pocket expenses.

the added cost of therapy
That stress doesn't end with diagnosis, and for many, the added cost of seeing a therapist can feel out of reach.

why flatwater is different
we built flatwater around the barriers keeping people from care
-
Therapy is expensive and often out of reach - averaging $175 in Austin. Flatwater funds it directly, so cost is never the reason someone goes without care.
-
Even with insurance, out-of-pocket costs can run $100 or more per session. Participants don't need to find an in-network therapist or receive a formal diagnosis just to start, we fund care directly.
-
Finding the right therapist is daunting and often overwhelming. Our network is already vetted - cancer-informed, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed so no one has to search alone.
more than access to therapy
Finding the right therapist matters.
Finding a therapist who understands the emotional impact of cancer can feel overwhelming. Flatwater's vetted network removes that barrier: licensed psychotherapists specialized in trauma and cancer-related issues, whom we connect participants with and fund directly.

Hear from our community
“It is difficult to find black therapists on a regular basis, let alone someone who understands and is able to help me navigate how I have placed everyone in my family before myself and my body and my needs. Being able to have an amazing black woman walk with me through this healing journey has been invaluable.”
— natasha, former program participant
“Flatwater has been my saving grace in helping me with my cancer diagnosis. It’s run by a group of amazingly talented, caring, empathetic, and compassionate individuals. I’m forever thankful and humble for their services and support.”
— anonymous, Former program participant
“Thank you so much to all of the donors. I’m a single mom, who was with my daughter throughout the last three years. I had a hard time at first because I didn’t know how to grieve. If it wasn’t for your help and generosity… there would be no way that I ‘d have been able to pay for therapy - for my daughter or for myself.”
— Florisel, former program participant
THe need continues
A diagnosis doesn't stay with one person. Flatwater exists to meet that need - for everyone it reaches.
Every session we fund is one less barrier between someone and the support they need.
