The Sunny Blount family Fund
Built with love to carry Sunny’s legacy forward and support families facing the countless challenges of cancer, at any stage of the journey.
The Sunny Blount Family Fund
Created by several loved ones to bring strength, healing, and hope to families navigating the tumultuous waters of a cancer journey. Every dollar donated to this fund contributes directly to supporting a family in need.
The average cost of care for a family seeking support through Flatwater is $4,800. This provides a family with 40 sessions of therapy with a mental health professional specializing in trauma and cancer-related care. This emotional support is essential in helping families find calm amidst the chaos of cancer.
If you’d like to make a gift in honor of Sunny, or feel moved by this family’s story, please consider making a donation today.
Meet The Blount Family
Sunny was a vibrant 41-year-old mom of three children under the age of five (Emerie Jeanne, Porter Michael, and Hadley Jane), a devoted wife of nine years to her husband Scott, a fun and feisty daughter, sister, aunt, and niece, and a fiercely loyal friend.
She was diagnosed with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC) just 12 days after her youngest daughter, Hadley, was born. Over the course of the 22 months that followed, she endured seven lines of treatment, including 44 rounds of chemo, a half-liver resection, a double lumpectomy, late-night ER visits, septic shock, and a torturous month in the ICU. All the while, she refused to miss milestone moments. She wholeheartedly raised her children alongside her husband and put up the most valiant fight against cancer, inspiring countless people worldwide. To all who knew her, and all who had yet to meet her, this was simply her way. To ferociously persevere.
As longtime friends of Flatwater, they were deeply involved with the organization and stood as courageous champions of the mission. Throughout their fight with cancer, Sunny and Scott sought out therapy for themselves and their children because they knew the benefit it would bring. The support they received was radically life-changing. Therapy helped ground, center, and calm their nervous systems, guiding them through the immense challenges that cancer brought into their lives. This strengthened their relationship and reinforced their bond, living out the promise of their song, “betting on us,” every single step of the way.
At the end of her brave and unwavering 22-month battle, Sunny passed away on May 1, 2026 surrounded by her closest family, leaving us with her final, powerful words, “love, love, love.”
Sunny Blount was a force. With her signature grit, resilience, humor, and enormous heart, she was a true ray of sunshine, and you could feel her warmth simply by basking in the light of her energy. Whether you realized it or not, she changed you. She changed your perspective on the world, redefined your understanding of strength and fortitude, and inspired you to grow.
It was Sunny and Scott’s shared wish to continue helping others find the same pathways of support that sustained them. Flatwater was an anchor for them during an otherwise dark and uncertain time. The Sunny Blount Family Fund was created to carry her beautiful legacy forward, giving other families the same hope and healing that the Blounts found so vital during their own fight and beyond.
Fundraisng through the years
Sunny and Scott have been close friends of Flatwater since the very beginning. What started as a beautiful friendship of over 20 years between Sunny and founder, Mark Garza, progressively grew into a shared passion for the mission. When they first met, Mark was navigating his own family's journey with his father’s cancer diagnosis, and Sunny witnessed firsthand the profound impact that experience had on them.
Years later, when Scott came into the picture, he immediately connected with the mission and enthusiastically signed up to paddle in Flatwater’s Dam That Cancer in 2016. At the time, Scott jumped in because it promised to be a meaningful experience with an incredible community. No one could have predicted how vital that very resource would become for their own family years later.
In 2021, Scott rallied his partners and team at VIUM Capital to support his fundraising efforts and join him on the water. Led alongside his close friend and fellow VIUM Senior Managing Director, Brendan Healy, the team became a powerhouse of support.
Following Sunny’s diagnosis in 2024, the meaning of the mission shifted profoundly, deepening their drive and dedication to the cause, and so #TeamSB grew. Their fundraising skyrocketed, fueled by a collective desire to support others in honor of Sunny’s brave fight and Scott’s devotion alongside her. Witnessing their journey transformed how the entire VIUM team saw the impact of this work and, in turn, inspired a massive effort to help other families. As her family so lovingly says, "leave it to Sunny," to always have a way of motivating the people around her.
To date, Scott and VIUM Capital have collectively raised over $1 million for Flatwater.
This extraordinary generosity translates to more than 10,000 mental health therapy sessions for families navigating the challenges of cancer.
